Laundry Room Refresh

This lower level laundry room has been given better functionality for a family with one boy and three girls from ages two years to ten years. For a family of six, laundry is a daily chore. To have a more efficient laundry room, shelving and a countertop were needed for sorting, folding, and ironing. The space has been cleaned of clutter and the laundry baskets are now stored on the metal shelf near the countertop. The walls and ceiling have been repaired on a budget. Also, inexpensive spray paint gives a splash of red color to the metal wall cabinet and metal shelf. The metal wall cabinet stores all of the laundry detergents and supplies for keeping clothes clean.

Nana’s Toy Closet Organization

Nana’s toy closet needed organization with the constant flux of new toys for the growing grandkids. Inside the toy closet are three walls of shelving to hold photographs, books, board games, and toys. With some simple rearranging, the books have been organized by category in order for Nana to find what she wants quickly. Some of the games and toys for the younger children have been stored closer to the floor for easier reach. Now the grandkids will be able to reach the toys and be free to play.

A family with two growing young girls share a bedroom. The girls are three months and three years old. The bedroom elements are essentially the same except for a larger twin size bed (instead of a crib) for the girls to share and fabric covered milk crates to hold toys and blankets. This project required some space planning in order to accommodate the larger bed. The room has been reconfigured with the larger bed near the far window, the two dressers close to the door, and the new milk crate “shelves” near the other window. Vintage fabric was sewn together to cover the milk crates for toy and blanket storage. The entire room was organized in order to consolidate cloth diapers, clothes, and toys into the shared space creating open areas for sleep and play.

This open play area adjacent to the kitchen was updated for a family with two boys and two girls from ages three years to eleven years. Some existing furniture has been repainted and a vintage trunk and three vintage crates have been used to store toys and books. All of the toys and books have been stored at an easy reach height for the kids. The large wall has a wire mounted to hang art and the entire wall has been painted with chalkboard paint so that the kids can draw with chalk on the wall. No money was spent on furniture or materials. All the elements in the space were found in the house and garage and reflect the eclectic style of the family.

For a family with children it’s important to have space to play and learn. Whether you call it the craft room or studio, you can create a space that both kids and adults can enjoy. This project is for a craft and sewing room within a laundry room for a family with three girls from ages nine months to six years. The space and budget may be small, but there are always simple and inexpensive solutions to create a fun and functional room. Clear and colorful containers were purchased to hold craft tools and supplies. Reclaimed wood from a picnic table was used to build three wall-hanging shelves. The final product is a small, organized space with big potential for creative projects.

Family photos displayed at home are memorable for you and your guests to enjoy. A great way to display your family photos for years of viewing is to print them in either sepia or black and white. Those photo finish options allow for a more timeless and classic style. Also, the neutral colors will coordinate with anything in the room. This project started with a blank wall and was transformed for the final result after selecting and printing the featured photos and purchasing a collection of simple black collage frames.
